Christmas not only means baking but can also mean crafting constantly with your littles because there is no better time to make crafts that you can store away and use at a later date or even ones that you can look back on and admire. They are like little moments frozen in time.
Usually, we make a different Christmas craft every year and it’s typically one that will let me remember how small they were at that time. Because face it, babies just don’t keep! This year, I opted for something they can enjoy more than just letting me enjoy it. Christmas play dough! Hear me out parents before you go, “absolutely not!” We made this together as it was super easy with just a few dry ingredients and I was able to use a couple essential oils too which made my house smell like Christmas. This was something they could enjoy and got to get in some sensory play which is always a good thing.
Let’s start with what you’ll need!

Christmas Play Dough
- 1 Cup All Purpose Flour
- 1/4 Cup Salt
- 1 TSP Cream of Tartar
- 1 TBSP Vegetable Oil
- 3/4 Cup Boiling Water
- Vanilla Extract
- Almond Extract
- Peppermint Oil/Extract
- Cinnamon Oil/Extract or Thieves EO
- Food Coloring
- Glitter ((optional))
Add all your dry ingredients together into a mixing bowl along with vegetable oil and stir together
Add in the boiling water as well as any food coloring or extracts that you wanna use
Stir it all together. Once it's cooled down, knead with hands

We made three different types because why not! Sugar Cookie, Christmas Tree, and Gingerbread and all were a huge hit! I didn’t have any glitter like I thought I did when we made them but, the kids enjoyed it all just the same.
Once you are done playing with it for the day, to ensure longevity, store in an air tight container or grab some plastic wrap and wrap it up tight. Enjoy some more photos below from my littles enjoying their new Christmas play dough!

Oh my what a fun activity! I can’t wait to do this with my little next year!
This recipe is so simple and doesn’t require cooking, which is great! I love playdough!
I love that these smell like the holidays!
I love that this is simple and homemade. I think I’m going to make some tomorrow for my little one to play with. I love a homemade playdough recipe because I might be the one person on earth that gets nauseated from the smell of actual Playdough.
We love homemade playdoh in our house. We haven’t tried scented playdoh though, I think my kids would love these even more! Will be trying these out over the Christmas holidays. Can’t wait!
Ah I wish my kids were still little…this is so awesome!
Love your home based holiday playdough ideas. They are super interesting and most importantly they are easy to make.
