Christmas trees are one of the biggest staple pieces for Christmas decorating and if you love this season like I do, then you probably have multiple trees too. Which means, different themes of course! There’s so many out there to chose from and I know that it can definitely get overwhelming. Especially when you walk down the aisle at Walmart or Target and see all of the millions of ornaments. I know I have!
Typically I have two trees up, one in the living room which is the main tree and then one upstairs in my bedroom since usually the bedroom is our family’s hub. The one downstairs is our main one so that one gets all decked out and has the theme of red, white, black & white plaid with lots of farmhouse elements. I love a good farmhouse theme! There are also some ornaments on it that are from my grandmother and those are extremely special. This tree typically is one that the adults (my mom and I) only decorate since while the vast majority are shatterproof, there are quite a few that aren’t.
Our upstairs tree is a bit more on the traditional side with a few of the same ornaments from the main tree but is mainly just red, gold and red & black plaid. I love plaid if you can’t tell. That one is the tree that we decorate together as a family since all of the ornaments are shatterproof.
My advice when decorating trees or when deciding what theme you wanna go with is to take a look at the ornaments and decide if you wanna go traditional red and green with it, do you wanna do fun funky colors like pink and baby blue, or do you wanna do a more minimalist neutral palette. All of these can be extremely fun! The kids all get their own mini tree and they get to chose the ornaments for them so if you’re wanting to do something like that, you can even have several trees with several themes.
I personally love the traditional and minimalist color palette so I tend to always buy those types of ornaments. It just gives your home that Joanna Gaines vibe and we all know that everyone loves a good Chip & Jo vibe.
I didn’t know that choosing a theme was something that people did. I use the ornaments that my parents got me throughout my childhood.
Great ideas! I never thought about a tree theme! I just throw everything I’ve collected from the years on it lol.
These trees are beautiful! I think the theme for my tree is “we have kids.” 🙂

Nice tips! Me, I always have a traditional and a minimalist styles of tree but I also want to try a colorful style of it and I am sure kids will like it.

These are all pretty! Our tree is always a hodge podge but as the kids grow up, I hope to have a themed tree too!
Having a theme each is exciting! I make sure to have a different one each year and I agree with you that I mostly decide based on the ornaments that I have. This year, we’re making our first-ever Disney themed tree.
It seems crazy after reading this, but I’ve never decorated a tree with a theme! Maybe this year is the year to try it!
